How Big 12 ties are broken

When two teams finish tied in conference play, Big 12 applies these steps in order until one team is ahead:

  1. Head-to-head result between the two teams
  2. Record against all common conference opponents
  3. Record against the highest-placed common opponent in the standings, then the next, and so on
  4. Combined conference win percentage of each team's conference opponents
  5. Total wins in a 12-game season
  6. Ranking-based step (CFP rank, computer composite or similar): KickTip uses its rating as a stand-in
  7. Random draw (coin toss)

Ties among three or more teams use a similar list, starting with results among the tied teams. This is a plain-English summary of the official policy; the official text controls.

Known limitations

  • The SportSource step is replaced by KickTip's rating; the coin toss is modeled as a random draw.
  • 'Total wins in a 12-game season' counts at most one FCS win; NCAA-exempt games are ignored.
  • KickTip uses the official Big 12 policy labeled 2024-present (republished Nov. 4, 2025).
